Reflections on Disasters

I found this article in my email today from the NCTE.  (They send such great and timely articles.)  The article focuses on how important it is for children to reflect when a crisis occurs.
While the children in this study had experienced a flood, the information can help you look at the importance of writing and art in expressing feelings after any crisis.  The article ("'Wen the Flood Km We Had to Lv': Children's Understandings of Disaster") is found here.

Hurricane Season

As Irene heads for the East Coast, teachers might want to find these two books.  They will fit nicely in your weather unit!  They would also be great additions to reader's and writer's workshops.  Both books have brothers as main characters.

David Weisner's childhood memories inspired his book.

London's book takes place in Puerto Rico.

Hope all will be well as she heads towards my neck of the woods!
